Sometimes we just need a little healing. It’s okay to heal. It’s okay to be well. You don’t have to own your “sick”. You don’t have to identify with your sickness. It’s not who you are. It’s a facet of your being but it’s not you.

Herb a Day Campaign: Quassia | Quassia amara

Herb a day Campaign : Quassia is bitter! It actually contains the most bitter substance found in nature, Quassin. Bitters make a lot happen in the system. They stimulate digestion, they make the digestive organs work more efficiently. If small amounts are taken it will help to increase the appetite. This is important for feeble, emaciated people so they can feel hunger and increase food content to renourish theirselves. Ginger works well with quassia in this instance. In larger doses, it can have an emetic action on the body. Parasites hate Quassia, but to be fair, it has the ability to kill many types of parasites in the body. They have good reason to not like it. It also is used as a natural insecticide on crops. Makes sense because a lot of the lesser animals are affected adversely by the herb. In Brazil, it is given as a tea for Malarial fevers. And one of the things I’ve always tried to offer it for is people who like the alcohol too much. Many have said it will lessen their desire for alcohol. I’ve seen it to be true. #herbadaycampaign #dustigregory #herbalist #dallasherbalist #masterherbalist #quassia #amargo #hombregrande #bitter #parasite #malaria #digestion #herb #slanginherbs #health #healing #nourishing #nature #natural #drsebi #askanherbalist

Keep those dandelions around! They are some of the first flowers that bees nibble on during the spring time. And if you like to eat, and ya know “bee alive” you’ll let them eat too.
Friendly little reminder that our herbs really do matter.

Herb a Day Campaign: Aloes | Aloe ferox

Herb a day Campaign : Aloes. It’s also known as Bitter Aloe (because it’s sooooo bitter) or Cape Aloe (because it’s from South Africa). This herb is a laxative. No ifs, ands, or butts. (See what I did there ;)) It has bitter colon stimulating constituents called anthraquinones. This herb property stimulates the bowels to move and allows the intestines to be purged of solid waste and mucus. It’s the most stimulating laxative I’ve ever used in my work. People seems to love it though because a little goes a long way and it is super effective. The bitters always make the digestive system wake up. It gets digestive juices moving and the muscles in the intestines moving too. It’s a match made in “clean out your bowels” heaven. It has some other pretty impressive attributes too such as being used positively to reduce the symptoms of IBS. In studies made my L. Langmead in 2004, they found when Aloes was used daily it greatly reduced symptoms of IBS for almost every single participant. It stimulates lymphocytes and fibroblastic cells for immune modulation. Reduces inflammation. Has anti viral properties. Helps to heal stomach ulcers too. The inner gel of the plant is used a lot like it’s cousin Aloe Vera to heal wounds and burns and skin irritation. It’s also used for dandruff and promoting hair growth when used on the scalp. So, let’s here it for this beautiful, bitter, balancing, behemoth of a plant!! All hail the mighty Ferox!!

Herbal Tea of the Day: Hibiscus, Pau D’Arco, Lemon, Orange, Ceylon Cinnamon, Coriander Seed, Rosehips, and Lemongrass

Tea of the day : Hibiscus, Pau D’Arco, Lemon, Orange, Ceylon Cinnamon, Coriander Seed, Rosehips, and Lemongrass

Some days I want bright fruity teas. Some days it’s mellow and sublime. Today I’m happy with the bright and fruity.
Making and drinking herbal teas is a whole situation for me. It doesn’t matter what combination I decide to throw together, I’m still going to get benefits from it. Sometimes I want to make my tastebuds dance. But as most of us know, some herb’s flavor are ALOT!

If I have someone new to drinking teas I usually let them down softly with a nice flavor tea that does the job. As they get used to all the new flavors I’ll make them stronger, tangier, a bit more bitter. Our body loves all these flavors. Our tastebuds might be slow to the party but our body instinctively knows it’s going to do us good.

Some of the stout tasting herbs that I really enjoy are Osha Root, Black Seeds, Dong Quai and Schisandra. What herbs do you like with it’s strong flavor?
