The state of wellness, not merely being free of injury or illness. Wellbeing. There’s a whole lot that goes into health. It’s a step above. Health isn’t just about being not sick. You have to work at being healthy. Having wellness. There are detriments of Health they are genetics, nutrition, lifestyle, and environmental. There might be a few folks who just have health without trying, but most of us do have to do some work to maintain our wellbeing. The 6 dimensions of wellbeing and health: 1. Physical- maintaining body through exercise, nutrition, sleep, and avoiding harmful habits. 2. Emotional- Being aware and comfortable with your own thoughts and feelings. 3. Spiritual- Having a sense that life has meaning and purpose. 4. Intellectual- Continued learning and being able to connect with others on a cerebral level. 5. Environmental- Respecting nature and your surroundings and doing healthy work focused on conservation. 6. Social- communicating well with others. Being able to contribute and engage in a healthy way. Being able to focus on all areas will help you to maintain health and wellness. Herb a day Campaign : Lets talk Herbs! Adder’s Tongue Fern. This girl is old. Like old old!! I don’t think she will mind us discussing her age honestly though. She has been around. Talk about being a fly on the proverbial wall of humanity! You can tell her nothing! Periodt! She’s seen it all, or at least a whole damn lot of it. These ferns can boast having the highest chromosome number of any living thing on Earth. 1,260 chromosomes to be exact! Can you even begin to imagine the infinite wisdom contained in all of that information?? Humans have a humble 46 chromosomes (mostly) and us as a species are completely mind blowing. “How is this so, Dusti” you might be asking. “How do they have so many chromosomes”? Well, it comes from the process of “Polyploidy”. Essentially, the cell nuclei of of an organism ends up with more than the usual two sets of chromosomes. Evolution ain’t no joke. It happens to ensure the survival of the species. We can’t even really see the effects of evolution on us as far back as we are able to see our human race. There have been some basics here and there and look how long those took. Adder’s Tongue Fern s have seen this process through at least 10 times. 1.2.3.4.5.6.7.8.9.10 times! Now that’s impressive.. These guys are so ancient and so primitive that genetic sequencing shows they aren’t even “true ferns”. Or, what we see as true ferns. But hey, the genes don’t lie. They have been given their own division called Ophioglossophyta instead of the usual Pteridophyta. So, there’s a little tidbit of info for your noggin. How about you look at the plants around you. Sit with them. Talk to them (I tell mine they are beautiful). Learn about them and what can do for you. I know I am here to be of service to every one of you. So are the plants. I don’t think we can thrive without them. Get closer to all things that we get to live with. People, animals, water, plants, the actual earth itself. I’ve been playing with these statistics lately. I like statistics. Statistically speaking “they” say there are approximately 50,000 medicinal plants on this planet of ours. I’m going out on a limb here and I’m going to say I bet there are way more than that. It seems absurd to me that only about 1/8 of the plants we encounter are helpful for the species on our planet... hmmm.

But I digress, let’s say that we use one herb a day in our bodies. It would take us almost 137 years to go through every single plant that is claimed to be medicinal. That’s a beautiful thing, y’all!!! That shows me that no matter what is going on in a body, the odds are in our favor that there is a plant that would be beneficial to us. Ah, what comfort.. I’m always feeling content that I will never learn all of the herbs and what they do for us. It lets me realize I’ll get to keep learning for the rest of my life and never ever run out of herbs to learn as long as we can keep the biosphere intact.

I can’t wait to do classes for all of you. I’ve been really busy lately but don’t think it’s not on my mind. We’re going to learn together.

Herbal Tea of the Day: Calming an Over-Immune Response

Tea of the day: Astragalus Root, Marshmallow Root, Cinnamon Bark.

Hear me out. A lot of the times when the immune system activates to fight infection, it deploys lots of workers to the site of infection. For killing purposes as well as repair and protection.
When a battle is being waged the area of this battle gets congested. Full of good and bad guys fighting for the top space. If there are too many fighters, either good or bad, it’s hard to get new supplies through to where they belong.

When we are speaking of our immune system in this instance, some herbs might have the ability to calm. To modulate the way the system overreacts. I liken it to your friend listening to your worries and patting your back or giving you a good hug. This helps you to calm down and take a step back and regroup. So maybe the herbs will do this for us when our body is working super duper hard to keep infection at bay.

If I was to make a tea today to do that I would probably use Astragalus, Marshmallow. I might even toss in Slippery Elm Bark and Kallawalla. If I didn’t know about these herbs I most certainly would take some time to learn about them and their effects on my body.
