Serotonin | Enhancing Serotonin Naturally: An Herbalist's Guide

3/3/2024

Dear Happy-Feeling friends,

As a seasoned herbalist, I'm thrilled to share with you some natural ways to boost serotonin, our body's own mood-lifting neurotransmitter. Serotonin plays a crucial role in our overall well-being, influencing mood, appetite, and even sleep. Here are some gentle and effective remedies from the world of herbs to help brighten your days:

St. John's Wort: This cheerful yellow flower is renowned for its mood-boosting properties. It's been used for centuries to alleviate symptoms of low mood and anxiety. You can brew it into a soothing tea or find it in supplement form. However, be sure to consult with a healthcare professional before use, especially if you're taking other medications. In herbalism, we do not use St. John’s Wort if someone is on SRRI medication for depression etc.

Lavender: Ah, the calming scent of lavender! Not only does it help ease stress and promote relaxation, but it may also support serotonin production. Enjoy its fragrance in essential oil diffusers, herbal baths, or as a gentle herbal tea before bedtime.

Turmeric: This vibrant spice doesn't just add flavor to your dishes; it also contains curcumin, a compound that may enhance serotonin levels. Incorporate turmeric into your cooking or sip on golden milk for a cozy and uplifting treat.
Picture
Passionflower: Just as its name suggests, passionflower can ignite a sense of tranquility and well-being. This beautiful vine has been used traditionally to ease anxiety and promote restful sleep. Enjoy it as a tea or look for supplements at your local health store.

Rhodiola: Sometimes called "golden root," rhodiola is an adaptogenic herb known for its ability to support the body during times of stress. By helping to balance stress hormones, rhodiola may indirectly support serotonin levels, promoting a more balanced mood and energy levels.
Picture
Chamomile: A classic herbal remedy for promoting relaxation and easing tension, chamomile is a gentle yet effective way to soothe the mind and body. Sip on chamomile tea during moments of stress or before bedtime to unwind and support serotonin production.

Exercise and Sunlight: While not herbs per se, regular exercise and exposure to sunlight are natural ways to boost serotonin levels. Engaging in physical activity releases endorphins and promotes feelings of happiness and well-being. Likewise, soaking up some sunlight helps regulate our body's internal clock and encourages serotonin production.

I hope these natural remedies help you on your journey to a brighter and more balanced mood. Remember, incorporating these herbs and lifestyle practices into your routine can be a gentle and nurturing way to support your mental health. As always, listen to your body and consult with a healthcare professional if you have any questions.

Wishing you wellness and joy,

Dear Tea Buddy,

I hope this email finds you well. In today's fast-paced world, stress seems to be an inevitable part of our daily lives. However, I've found that incorporating certain herbs into my routine has been incredibly helpful in managing stress and promoting a sense of calm and relaxation. I wanted to share with you five of my favorite herbs that have made a significant difference in my life:

1. **Lavender**: Known for its soothing aroma, lavender is a powerful herb that can help reduce stress and anxiety. Whether used in essential oil form, added to bathwater, or enjoyed as a cup of lavender tea, this versatile herb can promote relaxation and improve sleep quality.

2. **Chamomile**: Chamomile is another herb renowned for its calming properties. Sipping on a warm cup of chamomile tea can help ease tension and promote relaxation, making it an excellent choice for winding down after a long day.

3. **Ashwagandha**: Ashwagandha is an adaptogenic herb that helps the body cope with stress and promote overall well-being. It has been used for centuries in traditional Ayurvedic medicine to support the body's stress response and enhance resilience.

4. **Holy Basil (Tulsi)**: Holy basil, also known as tulsi, is revered in Ayurveda for its ability to reduce stress and promote mental clarity. Incorporating holy basil into your daily routine, whether through tea, supplements, or fresh leaves, can help combat the effects of stress on both the mind and body.

5. **Passionflower**: Passionflower is a gentle herb that can help calm the nervous system and promote relaxation. It's often used to alleviate symptoms of anxiety and promote restful sleep, making it an excellent option for those seeking natural stress relief.

Foraging Tips for Spring: What Are Your Favs?

Make sure to leave enough for critters, and for the plant to survive and grow again.

Don’t take more than 25% of the plants in any given area. Ever. Be responsible.

Do take some and taste them and use them. That’s the way to get to know what plants are around you to utilize.

I love to make fresh plant tinctures of herbs. I always have alcohol and glycerine available so I’m prepared. This is a great way to have on hand herbs I want to use throughout the year.

Purslane is a wonderful lil treat to throw into a salad the day you harvest it.

Most of the dandelions that I get now a days go to my tortoise because they love them so much! (I still sneak a couple leaves for myself).

Some of these I’ve never personally found so I would love to try them all.

Nature provides. When wild harvesting plants, remember to only take a small portion of them. Take no more than 25% of the crop. This is to insure it can regrow and also so creatures like bees can feed off of them as well. These are for my tortoise, Eulard. And I’m going to slide some into my green smoothie in the morning as well. Every single part of Dandelion is edible from her flowers, to her stems, to her leaves, and even her roots. Go out and forage and see what you can find around where you live. Feeding Bees Sugar Water During Winter: It's Tricky So Please Read This To Avoid Hurting the Colony.

From Peirre Deyris Creations - Who Corrected The Instagram Re-post Below:
Ok first of all I am a beekeeper. You should absolutely not do that (regarding the pic posted below). It is very bad for the bees.

First people don’t know which kind of sugar to use, also there is two different ratios for sugar syrup. The 1:1 to stimulate wax production and brood (population augmentation) and 2:2 to feed in emergency “if needed”. Feeding like that will hurt the bees, cause that will create a fake nectar flow.

The Problem: Queen will lay a lot too soon and if people stopped to provide the syrup until spring bloom, hives/hive will starve to death or will turn weak and will manage badly pest, mites or diseases.

Let the bees be. They don’t need us, we need them. Spring is on the corner and the freeze will allow seeds to grow and provide even more flowers we never see because we don’t have a real freeze in the south. Bee mindful !

Thank you for your input. You gave us a lot of good info :)

@dandy_lion_emporium always happy to talk about bees !

Final Note from Dandy Lion Emporium:
The Instagram Post Below Meant Well, But Has Been Shown to Actually Cause a Hive to Lay Young Too Soon and the Early Births May Die if Proper Sugar Support Is Not Maintained. So, Know Your Bee Sugar Types, Syrup Ingredient Ratios, and How to Properly Feed the Bees if Necessary in Your Region's Climate in Emergencies Only.

Medicinal Stats Are a Wow Factor, But Many Plants Are In Jeopardy

4/14/2020

I’ve been playing with these statistics lately. I like statistics. Statistically speaking “they” say there are approximately 50,000 medicinal plants on this planet of ours. I’m going out on a limb here and I’m going to say I bet there are way more than that. It seems absurd to me that only about 1/8 of the plants we encounter are helpful for the species on our planet... hmmm.

But I digress, let’s say that we use one herb a day in our bodies. It would take us almost 137 years to go through every single plant that is claimed to be medicinal. That’s a beautiful thing, y’all!!! That shows me that no matter what is going on in a body, the odds are in our favor that there is a plant that would be beneficial to us. Ah, what comfort.. I’m always feeling content that I will never learn all of the herbs and what they do for us. It lets me realize I’ll get to keep learning for the rest of my life and never ever run out of herbs to learn as long as we can keep the biosphere intact.

I can’t wait to do classes for all of you. I’ve been really busy lately but don’t think it’s not on my mind. We’re going to learn together.
Sending all of y’all love 💕
